Announcing LandSea2026: Shaping an Observation Strategy, Together
Coastal observing communities, policymakers, and local and regional experts will meet in Brussels on 30 September to discuss the need for a Common Observation Strategy for land-sea interface areas: those precious areas of Europe and the world where marine and terrestrial habitats meet.

About Land-Sea 2026: a new conference to strengthen coastal observation
The land-sea interface area faces rising pressures, including increased pollution and biodiversity loss, carbon cycle dynamics, and climate change threats. Diverse efforts are currently being made to observe those crucial areas of the world, including through in-situ and satellite observations, modelling, and citizen science activities. But to fully unlock the potential of these efforts to understand and protect the land-sea interface area, further cooperation is needed.
Brought to you by the Horizon Europe project LandSeaLot, Land-Sea 2026 will assess the progress that has been made so far to improve observations and invite scientists, decision makers, and regional stakeholders to contribute to a robust Common Observation Strategy for the future of the land-sea interface. With sessions planned to introduce LandSeaLot’s mission, explore novel methods such as the use of cost-effective observation technology, and share success stories emerging from regional and local actions and citizen science collaborations, Land-Sea 2026 will showcase advancements in observation and give opportunity for input to the Common Observation Strategy for understanding and addressing challenges at the land-sea interface.
About LandSeaLot: answering the need for improved observation
LandSeaLot is a Horizon Europe project that aims to integrate, scale-up and enhance existing observation efforts – including in-situ, satellite, numerical modelling and citizen science efforts – to better study the land-sea interface area, where terrestrial and marine habitats meet. The
project’s first conference encapsulates its motto, “Let’s Observe Together,” in that it will connect diverse stakeholders involved in the observation of land-sea interface areas – including scientific experts, research infrastructures, long-term European initiatives and services like Copernicus and EMODnet, amongst others.
Further dialogue with local stakeholders and managers of land-sea interface areas is also ongoing towards this end in the LandSeaLot Integration Labs: 9 pilot sites across Europe working to develop new methods and collaborations for advancing observation. These stakeholders will come together in Brussels and assess progress so far, co-design and work towards the realisation of a Common Observation strategy to support European sustainability and society.
