Jachthaven Waterland opens as the new nautical heart of Monnickendam
The new marina connects watersports, living, nature and the historic town centre.
After years of planning, preparation and hard work, Jachthaven Waterland has officially opened its renovated harbour in Monnickendam. Two harbours have been merged into one modern, integrated marina with more than 650 berths, marking a major milestone for the Waterland region.
The festive opening took place on Friday 28 August, performed by Mayor Marian van der Weele. With modern facilities and extensive options for service and maintenance, the municipality of Waterland now has a future-proof nautical centre at its heart.
A Major Operation — Merging Two Harbours
Over the past winter, Jachthaven Waterland and Jachthaven Hemmeland were merged into a single integrated harbour. Hundreds of boats were relocated to make way for an entirely new jetty layout, fitted with modern floating docks from Sweden. A nature-friendly breakwater, a new work yard and a boat lift were also completed, alongside a multifunctional harbour building and a new service shed.
Beating Nautical Heart of the New Development Gouwhaven
The marina will soon form the beating heart of Gouwhaven, a new development of approximately 700 homes. At this special location, the historic town centre of Monnickendam, the green Hemmeland and the Gouwzee come together, giving Jachthaven Waterland a broader role in the municipality: as a gateway to the water, a place for recreation and connection, and a link between the existing town and the new residential area.
