Bryan & Cathy Deacon in Itinerant Child

During a three-month cruise in their boat “Itinerant Child” and after a personal recommendation from Mayflower Marina’s manager, Mr. Charles Bush, berth-holders Bryan and Cathy Deacon chose to visit Spanish member marina Puerto Deportivo Gijón.

The only marina in Asturias to be awarded the Blue Flag this year, Puerto Deportivo Gijon is a well-managed marina that hosts a number of international boating events including the great Figaro single-handed regatta and with a strong connection to the local area, offers visiting cruisers a lovely introduction to the local cuisine with a taste of the local cider and great offers on typical tapas dishes.

Mr & Mrs Deacon wrote of their experiences at Gijón as follows “Having been greeted by the on duty staff, refuelled and allocated a good berth, we settled in nicely and stayed five nights. Shortly after our arrival the director of Gijon Marina, Ms. Flor Guardado Herrero made herself known to us, letting us know that she had received an email from Charles Bush and had been looking out for us, which was lovely. We received a pennant from the marina to bring back to Plymouth which Charles has displayed and hopefully this will attract the attention of fellow sailors. Gijon is a lovely town and the marina provides a safe and welcoming refuge along the Asturian coast, we would highly recommend it to others and would like to send our gratitude to Ms. Herrero and her staff for making us feel so welcome.

Manager Flor Guardado commented “We are always very pleased to welcome TransEurope Marinas visitors to our marina and I also enjoy being able to recommend good marina destinations to our berth-holders. We are very proud of our local heritage and I derive personal satisfaction from being able to represent this area within the TransEurope network.”
